With the launch of the new Huawei P40, the Chinese giant also decided to launch a new version of its very popular smartwatch Watch GT 2, the GT 2e. A watch that tries to combine simplicity with an appealing design, robustness for the most demanding sports, all with a lower price compared to the original model. But is it worth it?
(First Impressions) Huawei Watch GT 2e: Cheaper and tougher!
Quite honestly, I have always loved Huawei watches. Especially from the first smartwatches based on the Google Wear OS Operating System, which featured a breathtaking design. (Even today they are successful among the Wear OS enthusiast community!)
However, unfortunately, Google did not do the best job with its watch OS. Therefore, Huawei decided to abandon this ecosystem to create its own LiteOS. Software that originally came to the market with the Huawei Watch GT 1 in 2018, side by side with the Mate 20 Pro.
A first version of a big bet, which was and is extremely beautiful and functional, achieving a brutal success in the market. But that unfortunately reached the market with few features, something that Huawei has been solving over time, being the Watch GT 2 and GT 2e the perfect example of this. So, at the time of the review, I stated that it was not really a smartwatch, but rather a ‘premium’ fitness tracker. (Link)
However, it seems that someone at Huawei read this review, and little by little the team responsible for smartwatches has transformed this gadget into something much more desirable and complete. Especially now that this GT 2e hits the market with a sportier look, as well as a lower price. But let's go by parts.
This is the big difference between the Watch GT 2 and GT 2e, since the internal components are exactly the same, being the GT 2e based on the 46mm version of the Watch GT 2. So it has a 1.39 ”AMOLED screen ( 454 x 454, 326 ppi), weighing 43g without a bracelet.
Thus, it is easy to conclude that the GT 2e exchanges the more business and premium aspect for something more sporty, while also bringing smaller buttons and much more difficult to press, something extremely welcome for me, which I spend my life accidentally loading while training at the gym or at home. In fact, with this new design, we no longer have the buttons entering the flesh and bones of our wrist … (HALLELUIA!)
In addition to all this, we also have a very different and more comfortable connection to the bracelet so that the watch fits snugly on the wearer's wrist, undeniably to achieve the best possible pulse reading and sleep monitoring.
However, as we are talking about something sporty, the GT 2e is water resistant up to 5ATM, being possible to take it to the bath or pool.
As I said above, the GT 2e uses exactly the same components as its predecessor! With a Kirin A1 chip, 4GB ROM, 32MB ROM and a 455 mAh battery. Which in turn should mean more or less 2 weeks of autonomy, depending on the use you give to GPS and other features
In other words, I would not expect great differences in performance in relation to the GT 2, which actually impressed me in a very positive way, although I like to see something more in the style of Wear OS watches of old. (Good news!)
However, just like all Watch GT, the watch connects to the mobile phone through the Huawei Saúde application, which is available for both Android and iOS.
Price and Conclusion
In short, the Huawei Watch GT 2e reached the European market at € 179.99, being a very interesting offer in an increasingly equipped and more expensive market. Stay tuned to Leak.pt to read the full review.
