Huawei P40 Lite: Good specifications combined with cameras that impress! – Usually, the goal of the big manufacturers with the arrival of a new smartphone, is to offer something different, innovative, to show rivals that they are really a tough nut to crack.
That said, we now have to welcome Huawei's new P40 Lite! A new smartphone that I can say with some confidence, that did not fall short of expectations. Especially when we talk about your photographic performance!
First, it is likely that you will still remember that Huawei remains banned by the United States from joining Google. In other words, due to this situation, this equipment does not have the services of the research giant, and as a consequence, there is no Play Store for anyone … However, we have Huawei's big bet, the App Gallery! That although it still needs to evolve immensely, it is beginning to show some potential.
Design – Huawei P40 Lite
Similar to other Huawei devices, this phone offers the “Punch FullView” design instead of the notorious Notch. In what is a design quite similar to the Galaxy S10 of rival Samsung launched last year, or Nova 5T recently launched by Huawei in the National market.
That said, I have to say that although the smartphone fits well in the hand, it is immediately apparent that we are not talking about a top of the range. Still, thanks to the excellent location of the buttons and fingerprint sensor, its use is extremely comfortable.
Still at the front, I have to say that once again we did not find a notification LED, something increasingly rare in the world of modern smartphones.
However, on the right side you will find the traditional bar to control the volume +/-, as well as the Power button that is now combined with the fingerprint sensor, which I categorize as one of the most sensitive and fast that I tested.
At the top you will only have a microphone, while at the bottom you have the main speaker, a microphone, the USB Type-C input and an increasingly rare 3.5mm headphone jack.
Finally, on its rear, the Huawei P40 Lite is equipped with a photographic module with a golden border, equipped with the brand's AI Quad Camera system with 4 cameras, as well as a Flash just below this same module.
Do you still remember to say that this smartphone doesn't feel like a high-end device in your hand? Everything is due to the fact that the structure of the Huawei P40 Lite is more prominent than the screen and its back. A design that will surely offer you another level of protection against falls. (Although it looks like the device comes with a non-removable cover from the factory)
(Huawei P40 Lite review) Screen and Cameras: The brand's asset!
The LCD IPS screen of this equipment is 6.4 inches, arriving with a FHD + resolution of 2310 x 1080p, which thanks to its 398ppi offers an excellent image definition. However, I have to say that I miss the OLED technology that unfortunately is not always offered in the price range of this equipment.
That said, the margins of this device are small, and the implementation of the 16MP camera on the screen itself is a design that really impresses. In fact, in my opinion, this implementation is the least intrusive, making you often forget that the ‘hole’ is there.
Now for the most important point for many enthusiasts, the Cameras!
First, as I said, on the screen you will find a 16MP front camera that until now has only surprised me. After all, the photos on the outside are taken with incredible definition and very quickly. Now ‘indoor’, even with low lighting, the photos are easily above expectations, almost always showing excellent results for my ‘selfie game’.
Performance of the rear 4-camera module
So here we will find the main sensor of 48MP together with an Ultra-Wide camera of 8MP, a camera with 2x optical zoom of 2MP and also a Macro sensor of 2MP.
In any case, this combination has always managed to achieve a good result. I even go so far as to state that photography was the main focus of this equipment by Huawei.
Now see some of the photos that this equipment managed to produce:
Interestingly despite the 48MP and the 8MP camera with 2x optical zoom, it will only remove the maximum of 6x digital zoom.
Power and Battery – Huawei P40 Lite
With the purpose of running everything smoothly and without stops, Huawei implemented in this equipment its Kirin 810, an Octa-Core processor that really impresses in everyday use. In addition to this SoC we still have 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, which for me is currently the Sweet-Spot in the mid range.
That said, despite being a mid-range SoC, I have to say that this processor ran any game I put in front of it without complaining in the slightest.
What is power without autonomy?
I don't know … Is that this Huawei P40 Lite never gave me this problem! After all, the 4200 mAh battery may not be the largest on the market. But the help of the equipment software almost always offered me 2 days of intensive use.
Interestingly, even when I misused the equipment and needed to charge it, the included “Huawei SuperCharge 40W” charger solved the situation at a glance! (It's basically an extra of the high-end smartphones in the company, giving a taste of its quality in the mid-range!)
Still, I'm a user and a real fan of wireless charging, and unfortunately on this device I don't have that option.
Audio and Call Quality – Huawei P40 Lite
Without a doubt, the processor, RAM and storage are the most important specifications for enthusiasts. There are still those who look for something that many take for granted and then get disappointed … The performance in calls! After all, we're looking at a mobile phone!
That said, I have to say that the Huawei P40 Lite both listening to music or movies and on the calls themselves is a treat.
Incidentally, I can also say that the equipment with only one speaker can reach much more volume than some equipment with Stereo solutions.
Passing only to the field of calls and video calls, the quality remains with a good volume and a good perception of everything that the other side is saying.
Conclusion – Huawei P40 Lite
First of all, at the time when I tested this equipment, I didn't know what price it would come to the market. So, now that the 329 € has been confirmed by Huawei, I have to say that for a mid-range smartphone it managed to surprise me immensely.
In short, in general, the Huawei P40 Lite is an excellent offer. In fact, if you are looking for a good camera configuration at a “low” price, this may be the equipment for you.
Note from the editor: However, be aware that this equipment does not have a ‘friend’ Google and as a result of this, there is no Play Store for anyone. Bear this in mind because due to this detail, most applications have to be installed by third-party app providers, and some may not even work, as is the case with Youtube.
