In my opinion, the market needs small and compact smartphones like bread for the mouth… After all, in recent years, despite the disappearance of margins, and even the inclusion of cameras on the screen, smartphones keep getting bigger.
Nowadays, the ‘normal’ is to find screens of 6.5 ”or larger! A trend that seems to want to continue, despite the users’ hands no longer stretching
Therefore, in the past it was possible to lower the physical size of a smarpthone by reducing margins. But nowadays, with the ‘infinite screens’, if the manufacturer chooses to put a 6.5 ”or even 6.9” screen in the case of the S20 Ultra, the device will be a real brick.
Yes, it is possible to remedy the matter a little by implementing some kind of curvature on the screen and rear window, but it remains a giant smartphone, where most likely it will be impossible to use the device with just one hand.
Why this trend for bigger screens?
Smartphones are bigger, because we want bigger devices to work, play, or just watch series and movies! In other words, smarpthones are increasingly a pocket computer, where we do everything and anything. In fact, in truth, the market for ‘tablets’ did not die by chance … It died because the smarpthones killed it.
However, not all consumers want a large device … That said, unfortunately, if you don’t want an iPhone SE 2020 that has an ‘old’ design, or doesn’t have the money to buy an iPhone 11 Pro, it doesn’t have much alternative in the Android world.
Which is a big mistake from Google’s partner manufacturers.
The Android world needs small smartphones to compete with Apple!
As you may know, Apple is currently offering the recent iPhone SE 2 that takes the minimalist design of the iPhone 6, as well as the iPhone 11 Pro, which is an authentic giant (in performance) in a dwarf body, especially compared to Android’s direct rivals. (The iPhone 11 Pro impressed me a lot in the analysis I did during the quarantine, because it offers one of the most complete experiences in the world of smartphones, in such a compact body. Now read.)
After all, going back to the subject at hand, the Android market has no alternative to these two devices, especially in the higher ranges.
In fact, even in the medium and low ranges, it is increasingly difficult to find a good compact device that does not compromise too seriously in other areas, such as screen quality, design, or photographic performance.
In short, more variety is needed in the smartphone market! After all, none of the leading Android manufacturers have devices with a screen below 5.7 ”on the market.
The ‘Bricks’ are cool, but they’re not cool for everyone. Now see:
- Galaxy S20 -> 6.2 “
- Pixel 4 -> 5.7 ”
- OnePlus 8 -> 6.55 ”
- Xiaomi Mi 10 -> 6.67 ”
- Huawei P40 -> 6.1 ”
In a nutshell, not all of us want to walk around with a 6 ”or 7” ‘monster’ glued to our heads, capable of remembering the time when the guys were talking on their cell phones on 7 ”LTE tablets.
In case you didn’t know, the last big compact smartphone was the Sony Xperia XZ2 Compact (top) with a 5 ”screen, which despite being smaller than the competition, had the SoC Snapdragon 845, a good amount of RAM, and be amazed, a very decent autonomy for its dimensions.
A device that interestingly still had significant margins around the screen! That is, in 2020 it would be possible to create something even more minimalist, with a superior performance.
